Paying by UPI With a Credit Card (2026) — When You Actually Earn Reward Points
You can link a credit card to UPI and pay by scanning a QR code — but a good share of those payments quietly earn you nothing. The feature is real and genuinely useful. The rewards are conditional in ways almost nobody explains at signup. Here's the actual shape of it.
This is narrower than our credit card rewards guide, which covers earning across your cards generally, and separate from UPI and wallet cashback, which is about offers the apps themselves run.
Only RuPay credit cards can do this
The first thing that trips people up: your Visa or Mastercard credit card cannot be linked to UPI. Only RuPay credit cards can. If your card isn't RuPay, the option simply won't appear in your UPI app, and no amount of retrying will change it.
Many issuers will convert an existing card to RuPay, or issue a second RuPay card on the same account. That's the practical route if you want this.
Linking is done inside your UPI app — GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and others support it. The card gets its own UPI ID, distinct from your bank account.
The reward rule almost nobody tells you
Here's the part that matters, and it's where the disappointment comes from.
Card issuers fund reward points out of the fee merchants pay to accept the card. On UPI, that fee structure is different: for small-value transactions at small merchants, the merchant pays nothing. No merchant fee means no funding for rewards — so many issuers simply don't award points on those transactions.
The commonly cited threshold is around ₹2,000, and the merchant's category matters as much as the amount. The upshot in daily life:
- Scanning a ₹40 QR at a tea stall — realistically, no points.
- A ₹3,000 payment at a large retailer's QR — usually earns at the card's normal rate.
So the mental model "UPI now earns me points on everything" is wrong. It's closer to: larger payments at larger merchants behave like a normal card swipe; small everyday scans mostly don't.
Categories that are usually excluded anyway
On top of the above, the exclusions that apply to your card generally still apply here. Across most Indian issuers the usual suspects are:
- Fuel — typically excluded from points (there's often a surcharge waiver instead)
- Rent payments — widely excluded, and increasingly carry a fee
- Wallet loads and gift-card purchases — almost universally excluded
- EMI conversions and their instalments
- Government payments, and often insurance and education via third-party platforms
These lists differ by issuer and change without much fanfare. Check your own card's terms rather than assuming — that's the only reliable answer, and it's usually a single page on the issuer's site.
The real advantage isn't the points
Even where rewards are thin, there's a benefit people undervalue: you're spending the bank's money, not yours, and you don't pay for it until the statement is due.
Depending on where the purchase falls in your billing cycle, that's up to roughly 45–50 days of interest-free float — on spending that would otherwise have left your account instantly. For anyone managing cash flow across a month, that's worth more than a handful of points.
The flip side is the obvious one, and it's not a small risk.
The risk, stated plainly
UPI is designed for frictionless, unconsidered spending. Credit is designed to be considered. Putting one on top of the other removes the natural brake that a bank balance provides.
If you use this, treat it as a card, not as a wallet: check the statement, pay in full, and never let a UPI scan become revolving credit. Card interest rates in India run high enough that one carried balance wipes out a year of points comfortably. Our credit score guide covers what the resulting utilisation does to your score.
A bill-payment app makes the discipline easier by putting every card's due date in one place — offers for those are on our CRED page.
How to check what you're actually earning
Don't take the marketing at face value — measure it:
- Make one payment of each type you care about (a small QR scan, a larger merchant payment).
- Wait for the statement, not the app's instant estimate.
- Compare points credited against the card's stated rate.
Two statements is enough to know exactly which of your habits earn and which don't. That's a more reliable answer than any list, including this one, because issuer terms change.
Frequently asked questions
Can I link any credit card to UPI? No. Only RuPay credit cards can be linked to UPI in India. Visa and Mastercard credit cards cannot be, so the option won't appear in your UPI app. Many issuers will convert your card to RuPay or issue a RuPay card on the same account if you ask.
Do I earn reward points on every UPI credit card payment? No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Small-value payments at small merchants often carry no merchant fee, so many issuers award no points on them. Larger payments at larger merchants generally earn at your card's normal rate. The commonly cited cut-off is around ₹2,000, but it depends on merchant category and your issuer.
Which payments are usually excluded from rewards? Fuel, rent, wallet loads and gift cards, EMI instalments, and often government, insurance and education payments made through third-party platforms. These exclusions vary by issuer and change over time — your card's own terms page is the only reliable source.
Is it safe to pay by UPI with a credit card? The mechanism is as safe as any UPI payment. The risk is behavioural: UPI encourages fast, unconsidered spending, and credit removes the balance check that would normally stop you. Pay the statement in full every month and it's fine; carry a balance and the interest will exceed anything you earn.
What's the benefit if the points are unreliable? The interest-free period. You're spending the bank's money and settling at the statement due date, which can be roughly 45–50 days later depending on your billing cycle. For managing cash flow across a month, that's usually worth more than the reward points.
