An online coaching subscription is one of the few purchases where the sticker price tells you almost nothing about what you'll actually pay. The same platform, the same exam, the same month can differ by thousands of rupees depending on plan length, which sale window you buy in, and whether you sat a scholarship test first. Monthly plans are the trap

Across ed-tech platforms in India, the discount structure is deliberately lopsided: the longer plans carry the real cuts, and monthly plans barely move. Platforms price this way because monthly subscribers churn, so there's no incentive to discount them — while a 12-month commitment is worth buying with a steep upfront reduction.

The consequence for you is uncomfortable but honest: the cheap-looking monthly plan is usually the most expensive way to study for a year, and the plan that looks expensive is usually the cheapest per month. If you're genuinely committed to an exam cycle, the long plan is the rational buy. If you're testing whether a platform suits you at all, pay the monthly premium deliberately — as the price of optionality, not as a bargain.

Take the free routes before you pay anything

Two mechanisms reduce the price before any coupon applies, and both are underused:

• Scholarship tests. Most major platforms run entrance-style tests that convert your score into a discount on the plan. These stack on top of sale pricing on many platforms, and the discount can exceed anything a promo code offers.
• Free trials and open classes. Beyond the obvious "try before you buy", these tell you the one thing pricing pages can't — whether a specific educator's teaching style works for you. On educator-led platforms this matters more than the syllabus, because you're really buying access to particular teachers.

Do both before you look at coupons. A code applied to the wrong plan is a small saving on a large mistake.

Price the exam category, not the platform

This is the detail most comparison articles miss. Pricing, educator rosters and included test series differ by exam vertical — UPSC, JEE, NEET, banking and CAT are effectively separate products sold under one brand. A platform that is excellent value for one exam can be mediocre for another, and the plan prices genuinely differ.

So "is Unacademy worth it?" is not an answerable question. "Is the 12-month plan for this exam, with these educators, worth it against the coaching-centre alternative in my city?" is.

What to check before you commit

• Does the plan include the test series, or is that a separate purchase? Test series are frequently unbundled, and a plan that looks cheaper can cost more once you add it.
• Is the content live, recorded, or both? Recorded-only access is a different product from live doubt-clearing, and the price gap should reflect that.
• What happens if you pause? Exam cycles slip; life happens. Understand the freeze or extension policy before it's relevant.
• Renewal price versus intro price. As with most subscriptions in India, the second year rarely costs what the first did.
