Domains & Business Email in India (2026) — The Renewal Trap, Explained
A domain is the one thing in your stack you should never let anyone else control — and it's also where the sharpest price traps in web services live. Our cheapest web hosting guide covers hosting plans. This is about the two things bundled alongside them, where the pricing works very differently.

The first-year price is marketing; the renewal is the price
Domain pricing is the most extreme version of the intro-rate model in Indian web services. A .com at ₹99 for year one commonly renews near ₹1,200–₹1,500. That isn't a scam — it's disclosed — but it's displayed in a way almost nobody reads.
The number that matters is the renewal price, which you'll pay every year for as long as the project lives. Do the five-year arithmetic before you get attached to a name.
Two practical moves:
- Register for multiple years upfront if you're confident about the project. Multi-year registration usually locks a lower per-year rate and removes the annual renewal-shock decision.
- Turn auto-renew on immediately. A lapsed domain can be picked up by a squatter within days, and buying it back costs vastly more than the renewal. This is the single most expensive mistake in the category and it's entirely avoidable.
Domain privacy should be free or near-free
Domain registration is public. Without privacy protection, your name, address, email and phone go into a public directory — which in India means spam calls from web-design agencies within hours of registering.
Many registrars now include privacy free. Some charge several hundred rupees a year for it. Treat a privacy fee as part of the domain's real price when comparing, because you will want it.
Choosing the extension
.com— still the default for anything with ambitions beyond one market. Highest recall, and people type it by habit..in/.co.in— genuinely good for India-focused businesses, usually cheaper, and signals local presence..inhas no meaningful SEO penalty for Indian audiences.- Novelty extensions (
.store,.online,.shop) — cheap in year one, often expensive at renewal, and still carry a slight credibility gap with some users. Check the renewal before committing.
Don't buy defensive variations of your name at launch. It's a real cost every year against a hypothetical threat. Wait until the brand is worth protecting.
Business email: the part worth paying for
A yourname@yourbusiness.com address is the cheapest credibility upgrade available to a small Indian business — visibly more legitimate than a Gmail address on an invoice or a quote.
Three routes, in ascending order of cost:
- Free mailbox bundled with hosting. Fine for a single low-volume address. Deliverability and storage are usually modest.
- Dedicated email hosting. A few hundred rupees per user per month, better reliability and storage.
- Google Workspace / Microsoft 365. The most expensive, and the right answer once email is genuinely business-critical — deliverability, mobile sync and support are materially better.
If you're sending anything that must land — invoices, client quotes, order confirmations — deliverability is the whole product, and it's precisely where the free bundled option is weakest.
Keep the domain in your own name
This matters more than any price. Register the domain on your own account, with your own email, even if a developer or agency builds the site.
If your domain sits in an agency's account, changing providers becomes a negotiation instead of a decision. It's also worth keeping the domain at a dedicated registrar rather than at your host: if you ever need to move hosts in a hurry — an outage, a price rise, a dispute — you want the DNS under your control, not theirs.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my domain renewal so much more expensive than the first year?
First-year pricing is a promotional acquisition rate; the renewal is the real price. A ₹99 .com commonly renews at ₹1,200–₹1,500. Always check the renewal figure before registering, and consider multi-year registration to lock a lower rate.
Is domain privacy protection worth paying for? Yes, and many registrars now include it free. Without it your name, address, phone and email are publicly listed, which in India reliably produces spam calls within hours. If a registrar charges for it, count that fee as part of the domain's real annual cost.
Should I choose .in or .com for an Indian business?
.com for anything aiming beyond India or wanting maximum recall; .in or .co.in for clearly India-focused businesses, where it's usually cheaper and signals local presence. There's no meaningful SEO disadvantage to .in with an Indian audience.
Do I need paid business email, or is the free one with hosting enough? Free bundled mailboxes are fine for a single low-volume address. If you send invoices, quotes or order confirmations that must reliably arrive, pay for dedicated email hosting or Workspace — deliverability is the actual product and it's where free options fall short.
Should the domain be registered in my name or my developer's? Always your own, on your own account and email. A domain held in an agency's account turns any future provider change into a negotiation. Keeping it at a registrar separate from your host also means you retain DNS control if you ever need to move hosts urgently.
